About

Confusing, I know, that I’m called Goldie (in honor of Goldfinches), but my avatar is a platypus.  The platypus, an animal I can totally relate to, is my all-time favorite animal.  For more on that and further explanation of this blog’s title you can read this blog entry.  A brief explanation would be that the platypus seems to suffer from a bit of an identity crisis… part bird, part mammal, part reptile.  It appears to be a living contradiction and some view the platypus as an evolutionary anomaly.   I see it as beautiful.  I revel in its uniqueness.

I like to express myself.  I like to think deep and random thoughts.  I like to have fun.  This site is a place for me to do all that.   Here I will also document my quest for identity and explore what it means to be a mother, wife, daughter, friend, sister, worker, player, dreamer, believer… sometimes my many roles don’t fit together very well, or there isn’t enough room for all of them in one life.  I am still trying to figure out who I want to be and how all these pieces fit together… like the platypus.

I feel strongly about treating other people with understanding and compassion.  I try and help fight against disabilism.  I celebrate neurodiversity and do not think we should look down on other people simply because they are different.  I welcome people from all perspectives to this site as long as you play nice.  I have friends on both sides of some of the more hotly contested issues in the Autism Advocacy world and I am still finding my own way as to what I believe.  I know I believe in love & respect & dignity & looking on the bright side of things- with an occasional therapeutic rant thrown in here & there!

I have a wonderful husband, and two small and exuberant boys (only 17 months apart).  I call them Thomas and Percy (Thomas the Tank Engine, anyone?) .  I am surrounded by males…and toy trains!  My youngest son was diagnosed as having an Autism Spectrum Disorder and is receiving regular Speech and Occupational Therapy services through Early Intervention.  All my boys are “not boring”.  Some days I rejoice in their uniqueness, other days I wrestle with it.  Every day I love them.  They are a little bit “platypus” too!

I hate monkeys.

I hope this site enriches your life somehow… whether it be with a laugh, a new friend, or something to ponder.  And even if it doesn’t, I’m still having fun posting.

I just edited my “About” a bit… that is the wannabe artist in me. I keep tweaking. I can never be finished with my work. I keep wanting to go back to ALL my posts. It would be easier if I could just throw posts up on the page without much thought. Instead I ponder over every word. And then ponder some more…

I just updated my “about” again and added to the first section–

I like to express myself. I like to think deep and random thoughts. I like to have fun. This site is a place for me to do all that. Here I will also document my quest for identity and explore what it means to be a mother, wife, daughter, friend, sister, worker, player, dreamer, believer… sometimes my many roles don’t fit together very well, or there isn’t enough room for all of them in one life. Hence the blog subtitle “Trying to find my mismatched way in this mixed-up world”.

    Every day-just kidding!
Oooohhhhh yes I do~I just hold it all in-which isn’t a good thing I’m sure! I try not to bring others down with my down days-but I do occasionally share what is going on in my world as for the downside part…such as prayer requests and such.

Of course the five months have been up and down big time with Patch. It’s getting harder and harder when we are up and then we fall back down-aaaaaahhhhhhh!

I have a little something for you at my place! It’s an up thing-hehe! Check it out here:

Hey Goldie! I just took this quiz and found out I was a platypus in my past life-lol!

“You were platypus. You were eccentric and unclassifiable and it still shows. Your strength lies in your diverse associations with all walks of life. Although many people try to identify you, only you know your true self. You’re a self-thinker and a bit of an introvert.”

Hey friends, I just edited my “About”. Check it out!

I finally added some info about the journey we are taking through ASD land. It has become such a central aspect to this blog I figured it would help folks better understand where I was coming from.

Also, I changed my Title and tagline to “My Platypus Life: Awe and Angst, Ranting and Rejoicing”.
    What do you think?
Some I days I totally dig that my kids and I are so “platypus” (yes, I have turned it into an adjective)
and so unique, other days it wears me the heck out!

Just wanted to let you know Disney channel features an animated platypus in their show, Phineas and Ferb– their pet helps them fight against some evil scientist. Here’s the link, but I couldn’t find the character to put here. http://disney.go.com/characters/#/characters/animated/phineasandferb/

Who’d a thunk? I really couldn’t tell it was even a platypus until they mentioned it!
