Two life lessons
April 15, 2009
Two items in the media really struck a chord with me recently and brought to mind some important life lessons.
Life Lesson #1: If you jump into a den of hungry polar bears, you should prepare to be EATEN!
A woman inexplicably jumped into the moat of the Polar Bear habitat at the Berlin Zoo during feeding time. Guess what happened?
Someone actually got a picture of the attack and it is disturbing. But you know what? SHE was the one that jumped in there! What did she think was going to happen? (Although I wonder if there may not have been extenuating circumstances compelling her to jump.) It made me think about all the times I have done silly, reckless things and then felt sorry for myself when I suffer the consequences.
Life Lesson #2: Different can be good!
Have you all seen this? I have watched it countless times and still get emotional.
I am officially a HUGE Susan Boyle fan now. I hope she sees ALL her dreams come true. What a brave, talented woman!!!
As a mother of a child with special needs, who sometimes does not match that perfect little model that the world would impose upon him, this clip spoke to me on a VERY deep level. We live in such a fickle, shallow society. People are often automatically dismissed if they are deemed too different. It broke my heart to see that crowd make fun of Susan, and I felt triumphant WITH her when she brought them to their feet. She SHAMED them. It made me weep because she doesn’t fit the image that society thinks is cool and yet she ROCKS!!!
The internet is buzzing about Susan’s performance. CNN even reported on it today, “Never-kissed woman wows Cowell, becomes YouTube sensation”. You should read the comments people have made, they are wonderful! The video also showed up on Give Me My Remote. I love the comment by Catherine, “You have proven in a showstopping moment how we should not judge anyone on first appearances, nor should we ignore middle aged women and dismiss them as ‘invisible.’ You are magic.”
And as for the audience that made fun of her… well, maybe we should throw them to the Polar Bears!

These two stories really impacted my perception of humanity. When the woman jumped in the polar bear pool I was truly worried about the future of humanity. But then I heard Susan Boyle sing, and I heard the reaction from the judges and the audience when they realized how quickly they had jumped to conclusions about this woman.

WOW, firstly silly woman in the bear cage, not a clever idea.
I LOVE Les Miserables, it is an emotional song for me anyway, but to see Susan sing, oh my !!!! I have tears running down my face.

Polar bear thing – makes you wonder if she was thinking the bears were vegetarian bears.
It was hard to watch Susan sing, just because of the reaction from the judges and the audience. She has the voice of an angel, it just goes to show that beauty is in the eye of the beholder and it is only skin deep.

I absolutely loved listening to Susan Boyle sing, I’m not usually much on singing but her voice was amazing. And although it was painful to watch the crowd’s initial reaction (before she started singing) it was great to see them so moved as she began to sing.
A star is born… I hope all her dreams come true.
(and as for the lady who jumped in w/ a polar bear, I’m with you, what did she expect was going to happen?!)

I am not dead! Sorry, I have been spending my extra time gardening, cleaning, & organizing the special needs group at my church. I also seem to have a one-track mind and can only have one “focus” at a time. I guess you can say I perseverate
. So when I am focused on other things I forget to blog. If I blog I do NOTHING else and the house goes all to heck. Plus I can’t seem to do a blog post that takes less than an hour (except this one).
Thanks WS & HH for checking on me. You are good friends!
Jessica, cool new avatar. You always have such well-worded comments.
Danette, I read somewhere the comment that those sneers & jeers could have happened ANY TIME and been edited in to make it look like the crowd made fun of her. Huh. Whatever, she is still awesome!!!

ya got that right, maddy!
I’ve been thinking~ a lot has happened to susan boyle since she burst into our collective consciousness. wow, what a ride. I fully recognize that she would not have gotten as much attention had her looks and her talent NOT been in such stark contrast, however I also DO think she is very talented.
I feel bad for her that she has had some struggles with anxiety & feeling out of control. who wouldn’t!? what a life change! I hope that she can learn how to cope with the new stress in her life and I wish her well.
