An Orchestra of Voices

Chanticleer

While I was studying music in college I had the amazing opportunity to see a live performance by the all-male a capella group Chanticleer  http://www.chanticleer.org/

It was one of the most moving musical experiences of my life, and truly awe-inspiring.  This group of men weave their voices together seamlessly, and their countertenors can hit notes higher than most sopranos!  They have been dubbed “An Orchestra of Voices”.  My favorite piece was Ave Maria by Franz Biebl.   I have it on CD now and when I need peace and beauty I put it on and close my eyes and float over the flowing waves of music as they rise and fall.

On a funny side note, when I was in graduate school I played this piece for my boyfriend at the time, saying, “This is one of my most favorite beautiful things.  I want to share it with you.”  We listened together and I waited excitedly for his response…which turned out to be- “But I didn’t understand anything they were saying!”  Well, yeah, it’s in LATIN.   He spent the whole time listening being distracted by trying to understand the words and missed out on the beauty and passion of the music.    It was different to him so he didn’t give it a chance.  So I say to YOU– even if you don’t like classical music, and don’t think you can listen to Ave Maria even one more time, you should click.  It is unlike anything I have ever heard, and is a truly unique arrangment.  Try something new today!  And give it a minute…it takes a bit to get to the best parts.  I would love to hear what you think!  Happy listening!

Hooray! I am so glad you liked it and ESPECIALLY glad your son liked it! Wow, that is impressive that he would sit and listen to it. That’s like trying a new vegetable! How old is he again? What a cool kid!

He is 12, and took violin for two years until he tried band and discovered his love of THE TUBA.

It sounds like an elephant in my house!

*thunk* of all the instruments to choose. wow. that’ll build some arm muscles AND lung capacity! I am impressed. but poor mom…

Aww, come on! Only ONE, well, two people liked it? Anyone else? Anyone? Bueller? Bueller?
